Should you upgrade your mac or sell it ?
All Apple fans and mac owners love their mac devices. Its obvious because Apple makes products with the highest quality of material. All lot of consumers have bought Imac and apple mac books in the 2008 – 2015 times. The world saw a surge in apple products adoption. With time going now they want to either upgrade their Imacs and mac books or exchange them for the new ones. Due to popularity of apple products the prices have always remained in the higher side compared to other brands. So what should one do ? We have listed down what one can do to save money and still get the best bang for buck.
1. Upgrade your ram to 8 gb or 16 gb to boost your OS
If you find your mac slow the best thing would be to upgrade your ram as most notebooks either came with 2 gb or 4 gb ram back in time. Some macs would be able to only accept 8 gb total ram and some would be able to take 16gb of ram. Do keep in mind that you will need to junk your older ram as that may not be usable. This would itseld bump up speeds by around 10 – 20 % and your will find your mac much more usable and less sluggish
2. An SSD upgrade can bring new life
All previous macs came with only hard disk drives (hdd). Hard disk drives have a very small pipe for data throughput and in most cases the pc is is able to process your request with the cpu and ram but the hdd is what makes it wait in queue for processing the data. By far the most easiest and cheapest upgrade will be to upgrade to a solid state drive (ssd). It would bump of the speeds by close to 40% and you will see a new life in your mac. The same machine since built so well will be usable for another 3 years. Ssd’ have a data throughput which is close to 5x-10c of a hdd. This make the processing of request from cpu and ram much faster and hence speeds the machine.
3. Upgrade of CPU
Many would say why not upgrade the cpu also ? Cpus in all mac products are soldered on the main board and cannot be upgraded. In most cases of what we use on a day to day basis email, office suite, browser, chat do not require much processing power. All the generation of cpus that are coming add no value in increasing speeds for the above basic applications. The cpu utilization is hardly 2 to 5% of actual power while running these applications. So by even increasing your cpu speeds it will not make a big difference to the speeds.
4. Stay in time with the latest operating system
Apple now gives a free os upgrade for all devices. With time the operating system gets more and more optimized to the hardware. So its would be best recommended to upgrade to the latest os. If you choose to be on older os and upgrade your mac with a ram and ssd still you will get better performance. The newer operating systems are some times much lighter on using resources of the pc and hence can increase your productivity.
Now based on your budgets and actually usage you can take a decision what fits best. Maybe the money you save for buying a new mac can be spent on a small 2-3 day vacation 🙂
